A chemical equation is a symbolic representation of a chemical reaction. It shows the reactants (substances that start the reaction) on the left, the products (new substances formed) on the right, and an arrow (→) indicating the direction of the reaction.
For example: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
This means hydrogen gas reacts with oxygen gas to form water.
A chemical equation tells us what substances react, what substances are formed, and in what proportions.
